Bill Gething is Professor of Architecture and acting Co-director of the Centre for Property and Construction Research at the University of the West of England, and also practices as an architect and sustainability consultant, building on his extensive experience as a partner at the architectural and urban design practice of Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios.

He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Bath, an external examiner at the UCL Bartlett School of Environmental Design and Engineering Energy and Resources and is vice chair of BRE Global’s Governing Body. He was the RIBA President’s Sustainability Advisor from 2002 to 2009 where he contributed to the development of the RIBA’s Climate Change Guides and led the team that developed the Green Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work.

He has three overlapping areas of research interest:

Adapting to climate change: He wrote the briefing report to support design teams contributing to Innovate UK’s Design for Future Climate programme together with a book, Design for Climate Change, drawing out lessons learnt in the first tranche projects. He has built a particular specialism on overheating in current and future buildings.

Narrowing the gap between design intent and built energy performance: He was chair of the Concept Design and Planning stage workgroup for the Zero Carbon Hub’s programme of work in this area.

Responsible retrofit: His work aims to meet the challenge of finding robust, safe and effective ways to retrofit the existing housing stock for a low carbon future, building on his work under Innovate UK’s Retrofit for the Future programme.
